When is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Tromsø?

The Northern Lights season in Tromsø generally runs from September until early April, when the nights are dark enough to see them. It is possible to see the Northern Lights throughout this entire period.

We often recommend September/October and February/March if you want to combine the Aurora with more daylight. September and October offer beautiful autumn colours and golden light, while February and March are generally snowier and ideal for winter activities such as dog sledding and snowmobiling.

Arctic weather and Aurora activity are always unpredictable. Our guides carefully monitor the conditions and find clear skies on around 98% of our tours, but even under clear skies the Northern Lights must still cooperate. Sightings can therefore never be guaranteed.

What happens if we don't see the Aurora on the night of our tour?

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, so sightings can never be guaranteed.

Our guides do everything possible to maximise your chances, using their experience and knowledge of Arctic weather to search for the best available conditions and clear skies.

What should I wear and bring, and what is included?

We recommend dressing warmly in layers and bringing a hat, gloves and water.

During the Northern Lights Tour, we provide thermal suits, winter boots, a meal, hot drinks and photos taken by your guide.

Are children welcome, and how big are the groups?

The minimum age for this tour is 16 years. Northern Lights tours can involve long driving times, bumpy roads, late nights and very cold temperatures.

Our small-group tours have a maximum of 15 guests.

Question 5

Will I get professional photos of the Northern Lights?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Professional photography is included in our Northern Lights tours. Your guide will take photos during the tour and share them with you afterwards.

The included photos are high-quality files suitable for everyday use and sharing. If you would like a full-resolution file for large prints or maximum image quality, these can be purchased separately from the photographer.
